Yesterday, Christine and Betsy from @christinescri

Yesterday, Christine and Betsy from @christinescritters in Weston visited Westbrook Nature School. They brought two bird ambassadors for our Kindergarten children and Parent-Child families to meet and also picked up generous supplies donated by our community.

With the help of Ash, an Eastern Screech Owl, and Douglas, a Northern Saw Whet Owl, we learned about the vital work Christine’s Critters does to rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured birds of prey. They shared important tips for helping protect wildlife, including avoiding the disposal of food scraps such as apple cores and orange peels along roadsides. These scraps attract rodents, which in turn draw birds of prey to the roads where they risk being struck by vehicles. Through its educational outreach, Christine’s Critters raises awareness about preventing common injuries to raptors - many of which are caused by human activity.

This special visit gave us a unique opportunity to witness the beauty of these magnificent animals, deepen our respect for them, and foster a greater understanding of the importance of protecting wildlife.

Christine’s Critters cares for 22 permanent resident educational ambassadors and rehabilitates and releases over 150 injured birds of prey each year. Their work is entirely funded by donations, which go directly toward animal care, including vet bills, medical supplies, food, and aviary maintenance. Next week is the LAST week to drop off donations of gently-used goods at our non-profit school. Do you have clothes that no longer fit, old linens hiding in the closet, or a mysterious box of shoes that you haven’t opened in years? Perfect! We’re partnering with FUNDrive to turn your gently used items into support for Westbrook Nature School. Plus, it’s the perfect opportunity to declutter and organize your home before the holidays! Here’s how it works:

🧥 What to Donate: Men’s, women’s & children’s clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, bedding, towels, and other soft goods in bags. Small household goods such as, pots, pans, dishes, toys, games, books and media in boxes.

📅 When: Collection runs through Thursday, November 21st

📍 Drop-off location: Westbrook Nature School (7 Long Ridge Road, West Redding) Please leave on the front covered porch.

We made rain sticks last week in hopes to bring a little rain to Connecticut! 🌧️

We were curious and excited to find this black aco

We were curious and excited to find this black acorn in the woods today, could it be possible there are Black Oak trees at Westbrook (they usually prefer more temperate climates)? Turns out it was just rotten, our scientist students quickly figured that out. Still not sure why it was black, we find lots of rotten acorns but they’re usually brown like the others we find. 🤔

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our Kindergarten and Parent-Child Families, Alumni, Board Members, and Staff who sold and purchased tickets for our 50/50 Raffle. With your support, we achieved a total of $3,560 in sales this year! A special thank you goes to Danielle Nazzaro and Chloe Lamy from our Fundraising Committee for their help in executing this initiative.

Congratulations to the Fournie Family who won $1,780 and generously donated $500 back to the school! The Fournies, who initiated this important fundraiser years ago, continue to show their unwavering commitment to Westbrook, and we are deeply grateful for their ongoing support. We are incredibly appreciative of their generosity, as well as the participation of everyone who contributed to making this annual fundraiser such a success!
